The Meaning Behind Harry And Meghan’s Matching Red Outfits
Prince Harry wore his Royal Marines officers’ jacket for what might be his last time, so his wife Meghan decided to choose something matching.
With Prince Harry’s days as a member of the royal family coming to an end, so are his days with the British military. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have struck up a deal with the Queen over their decision to leave the royal family and move to North America.
The deal is that they will step down from all of their senior royal duties, as well as Prince Harry giving up all his honorary military appointments for at least a year. Despite this he issued a statement addressing the change, saying “given his dedication to the military community and ten years of service he will, of course, continue his unwavering support to the military community in a non-official capacity.”
That support was clearly seen on Saturday night in London at the Mountbatten Music Festival, a fundraiser for the Royal Marines Association, where Prince Harry wore his formal red military uniform, an appearance that might be his last in it. The Duke looked great in red, so his wife Meghan used the opportunity to match him, looking gorgeous in a caped gown by Safiyaa, with Stuart Weitzman pumps and a Manolo Blahnik clutch. The Royal Marines officer’s mess jacket is a formal version of what has become a familiar sight even for the casual royal watchers. For Prince William’s wedding to Kate Middleton in 2011, both he and Harry wore the red “Blues and Royals” uniform; Prince William, Prince Andrew and Prince Charles often wear it at Trooping the Colour as well as for other official royal family events. Prince Harry usually goes with the black version of the uniform, wearing it on his wedding in 2018, so this decision to go with the bolder red came as a surprise.
Even though Harry will be stepping down from his royal duties, he will continue to support the military, even after 31 March, the date when the two will officially step down. He has the Invictus Games at the Hague in May, a tournament where wounded servicemen and women compete in athletic events, which he personally has helped set up and grow.
It is a brave choice to wear a uniform that is a reminder of how much he will be giving up to a public event right before these life-changing decisions are realized. As a military veteran, he will still be entitled to wear his medals at future events, but not his uniform, reports claim.
So it is the last chance Meghan will have to match Harry in a formal red look of her own, the two of them really went out with a bang. The couple, who already found their way to one dazzling photo op this week, were a striking pair as they made their way into the Royal Albert Hall, where the BBC reports they received a standing ovation as they took their seats.
